UPDATE: 14th October 2004, Hampsthwaite United Legend Retires
Hampsthwaite United legend Jim Farrar today announced he was hanging up his boots, citing his latest knee injury as the final blow to end a glittering Hampsthwaite United career. Having signed for the club at the age of 16 in 1988 Jim has served the club gloriously over the past 16 years. He will surely be remembered for his glorious Cup final hat-trick of 1995 out at Kirk Deighton. Jim was a regular during the Ronnie Beecroft glory years and went on to manage the club for a couple of seasons.

UPDATE : 11th October 2004, Under-par United Easily Beaten
Hampsthwaite met Ripon City Magnets for the third time in five weeks and started the game strongly, the Magnets keeper making two great saves from John Bowdler. However it was to be downhill from then on as a United performance lacking both fire and enthusiasm, as well as simple concentration saw them easily beaten, brightened only slightly by a John Hobbs consolation. Hampsthwaite United 1-3 Ripon City Magnets.

UPDATE : 04th October 2004, United Lose 14 Penalty Kick Thriller!
The Divisional Cup brought Harlow Hill Reserves down to United in a tournament Hampsthwaite believed they had a good chance of going far in this season. However United found themselves 1-0 down mid-way through the first half before Brennan smashed them level almost immediately. Beecroft slipped over the ball which allowed Harlow to once again take the lead. Brennan again levelled for Hampsthwaite on the very stroke of half-time with, arguably, the best goal he's likely to score for the club. Picking the ball up in his own half he eased past the Harlow right midfield before destroying the full back for pace and curling the ball into the top right hand corner! What a strike! The second half was a closely fought battle that saw the game go into extra time. Harlow took the lead in the 100th minute and believed they had done it. However United showed character and Hobbs managed to bundle the ball over for Way to nod home to effectively send the game to penalties.

Harlow slotted their first 2 penalties, as did Brennan and Harper for United. Higham saved Harlow's 3rd penalty leaving Broadley to step up with the chance to put United ahead, but he missed. Way and Coates converted, leaving it tied at 4-4 and into sudden death.

Hobbs equalled Harlow's 5th strike leaving the game tied at 5-5 after 12 penalty kicks. Harlow took the lead again with the 13th kick leaving veteran United midfielder John Bowdler to keep United in the tie, he slotted wide and after more than two hours of action United were out of the Cup.

Hampsthwaite United 3-3 Harlow Hill - Harlow win 6-5 on penalties

UPDATE : 27th September 2004, Another Defeat
Mirroring last season, after winning their first two league games, United have now gone on to lose their next two matches. Boroughbridge started the much better side, swamping Hampsthwaite with some clever play and deservedly eased their way into a 2-0 lead. United could have easily pulled themselves back into it before the break, the best chance coming to Way from the penalty spot, who blasted straight down the middle, for the keeper to parry away. A much better second half saw the game contested well by both teams and had United's finishing been up to scratch, they could arguably undeservedly won this game. Boroughbridge finished Hampsthwaite off late on with a third and final goal to claim their first points of the season. Quite how this team have lost their opening two games is a mystery. Hampsthwaite now have a week away from league competition with the all important Alverton Trophy 1st Round at home next week. Boroughbridge 'A' 3-0 Hampsthwaite United.

UPDATE : 19th September 2004, Magnets Extract Their Revenge
The League Challenge Cup Preliminary round sent United back to the scene of their last victory just two weeks later... Hampsthwaite started the game the way they had ended the last, by scoring early, Hobbs netting on his return to the side. Way put United 2 ahead before Magnets finally stepped up a gear. Half-time saw United leading 2-1 and they increased their lead to 3-1 when Hobbs notched again. United then went on to lose 3 of their midfield quartet, Harper, Way and then Bowdler all substituted. Magnets got back into the game again at 3-2 and United looked like clinging on for the victory. It was not to be, however, as a deep cross in the final minute of the game saw Magnets equalise and take it to extra-time. Only one side looked like winning it from here on in, Magnets took control of the extra period and demolished a weary United side. The only consolation being that of these two fixtures, had they had a choice, United would have accepted a Cup loss, as long as they took the important 3 league points previously. Ripon City Magnets 6-3 Hampsthwaite United.

UPDATE : 4th September 2004, Ripon City Magnets Thumped!
Having taken to the field missing numerous players from last week's excellent performance and having lost this same fixture 11-0 just two years ago, the order of the day was damage limitation for Hampsthwaite... or so we thought anyway! Having never beaten Magnets, the plan was to sit deep and let them attack with Way & Brennan up front on their own. Magnets could have been ahead were it not for poor finishing, however it was Hampsthwaite who took the lead through a superb individual goal from Brennan. United went 2-0 up when Madden, on his debut, crossed gloriously for 46 year old veteran John Bowdler to volley home! Brennan increased United's lead to 3 when Madden was felled in the box after a great run, resulting in a penalty which Brennan smashed home! Just before the break a defensive mistake let Magnets back into the game at 3-1. Half time saw Player-Manager Way ask his players for more and they delivered! Allowing Magnets the ball in their own half, the home team simply could not break down the stubborn United defence and it was Way himself who smashed the ball into the top right corner for 4-1. Man of the Match, Brennan's day was complete when he launched a glorious strike into the back of the net for his hat-trick and United's 5th. Hampsthwaite also hit the bar twice during a gritty, determined performance. Ripon City Magnets 1-5 Hampsthwaite United! All this without last week's 5 Goal Hero and top scorer John Hobbs!

UPDATE : 28th August 2004
The same side as last week took to the field for the first league game of the season, newly promoted to Division 2 against The Albert. After a good ding-dong midfield battle, Hampsthwaite finally took the lead through Hobbs. The Albert managed to grab an equaliser just before the break. The second half saw United up their game and once Brennan got free down the right, he crossed superbly for Way to notch United ahead. From the restart Broadley put in a tackle, the ball ran to Hobbs and United went two clear with a clinical finish. The Albert kicked off again, and once again from the restart, this time Harper put a strong challenge, won the ball and played Hobbs in for United's 4th! 3 Goals in under a minute! Hampsthwaite's midfield took control of the game which saw Hobbs smash two more, either side of an Albert consolation goal! Easily one of the best United performances of recent times, the team looks well balanced and excellent both going forward and defensively, which bodes well for their main aim, staying in Division 2. The Albert 2-6 Hampsthwaite United.

UPDATE : 22nd August 2004
A full strength Hampsthwaite Side went up against their Sunday counterparts select XI and horribly underperformed. United played some good passing football at times and some terrible football at others. Never has the team hit double figures in recent history and yet, having won and scored 10 goals they were disappointed. Pre-Season has seen last season's rock solid defence ship 17 goals against in just 3 games, a worrying factor with the big kick-off just 6 days away. Fitness is still missing and each player must surely do something themselves this week in preparation for a large pitch out at The Albert next week. On a plus point Way hit a hat-trick, Hobbs and Harper each grabbed 2, Brennan smashed the opener and Chris Hay looked superb once again on the right of United's midfield. Hampstwaite United 10-6 Sunday XI.

UPDATE : 14th August 2004 - A Game Of Two Halves
The first Hampsthwaite-Killinghall local derby in 3 years began a competitive affair, after last week's debacle Hampsthwaite's players had to show an improvement and they did. At times, United played what could almost be described as flowing football during the first half and were rewarded when Harper, new to the midfield this year, once again showed why United had signed him by scoring for the second time this season! Brennan cut the ball inside and Way uncharacteristically slid the ball through for the central midfield man to notch United in front. An excellent first half display was followed by what can only be described as a poor second half performance as all Hampsthwaite's good work was undone when Killinghall smashed two quick-fire goals to turn the tables. The Nomads notched a third and fourth before Chris Hay gave United some respectability. Hampsthwaite United 2-4 Killinghall Nomads.

Not a bad result considering last season Hampsthwaite were 3rd Division and Killinghall were 1st Division, however the United players MUST begin to show character when going a goal behind, the problem dogged them last season and must not occur again this year. The team now have just 90 minutes of football next Sunday the 22nd to find the right balance and get everything right for the big kick-off against The Albert 6 days later...

UPDATE : 12th August 2004
It has come to my attention that certain individual's fitness levels are not what they were at this stage last season. It is imperative that YOU do something in your own time to remedy this situation. In case you have not noticed, we are playing at a higher standard this season, which will require you to be fitter and faster! Make no mistake, if you are NOT fit on August the 28th when the Season kicks off for real you will find yourself bottom of the 2nd Division and on the Substitutes bench.

UPDATE : 9th August 2004
Pre-Season was never going to live up to last year and with a stack of unavailabilities and a mounting injury list it wasn't much of a suprise United found themselves 0-3 down before they started playing some kind of football. Brennan notched a penalty to open United's goals account for 2004/05. Three more flew into the back of the United net between a Hobbs double and a great strike from Harper. Hampsthwaite desperately need their full backs in the side, which won't happen until the end of August but Sunday 22nd August should finally see the first choice United XI take to the field together, just in time for their Division 2 opener a week later. Hampsthwaite United 4-7 Pannal Sports.

UPDATE : 5th July 2004. League Members REJECT New League Structure

The annual Harrogate & District League AGM saw the League Member Clubs reject the proposed new League Structure. This Means that the League will revert to it's previous 4 Division structure of 2 up 2 down, however, due to the amount of new clubs entering the 3rd Division this season, it does mean that we have been Promoted to the 2nd Division.
